School Gem Mining

  • CLASS PRESENTATIONS:

    60 minute presentation (per 20-35 student class) includes:

    - Discussion of mineral identification techniques (color, hardness, streak, luster, cleavage, magnetism, and fluorescence), overview of gems to be mined, and mining instructions.

    - Each student receives a bucket of sand to sift and find 10-12 unique mineral specimens - over 3 oz. of rough gemstones (425+ carats). Student keeps everything he/she finds.

    - Student then identifies findings using his/her own gem mining identification kit (also to keep) including: plastic organizer storage case, Gem Identification Card, mini flashlight, streak plate, and a glass plate for hardness testing.

    - Student receives one more special treasure to take home - a genuine faceted (cut) gemstone in a gem jar.

School gem mining presentations are offered to Douglas, Cherry Creek, Littleton, and Denver County schools.

Given as either an introduction or a refresher to the Rocks and Minerals unit of the third grade Earth Science curriculum, the gem mining presentation is a fun hands-on learning experience.

Designed as an “in-house” field trip for third grade students (or any grade teaching rocks & minerals curriculum), the presentations consist of:
1.(the learning part) a discussion of the physical properties of minerals and identification techniques,
2.(the fun part) sifting buckets of sand to find 10-12 different types of gems,
3.(the application) identifying the gems found, and
4.(the best part) students take home everything they find (over 3 oz. - 425 carats), their gem identification kits, a bonus faceted genuine gemstone in a gem jar, and a memorable experience.

*** Presentations available also for first grade Rocks unit - focus is on types of rocks and characteristics. Gem mining would include different rock types as well as some gems and minerals. ***

Pricing

Pricing for the 2018-2019 school year is $15 per student.

All third grade classes would be scheduled on the same day or two consecutive days, depending on daily classroom schedule (minimum of 2 classes).
